Name That Cat (August 24, 2009)
Oh dear. It has been a long time since I’ve updated this website. My excuse is that I’ve been trying to get ‘Tell Me The Truth About Love’ into a readable state, so you guys can get your hands on it as quickly as possible. I’m working on the third draft at the moment, and there have been all sorts of problems with it - sections which are too long or too short, pace which is too slow or too fast, boring bits, repetative bits, not-funny-enough bits, bits that made even me go ‘eugh’.
I’m working very hard to correct all of these problems, and can promise you that most of them have been fixed. I’ve now just found a whole lot more which need correcting.
One thing I’ve decided to do for draft three is add a cat. There was a cat in ‘Ways to Live Forever’, and I liked it. Cats are friendly, and very comforting in times of distress.
My request to you lot is: can you help me find a name for this cat? Put suggestions for cat names in the comments, and I’ll choose my favourite. The winning cat namer will be acknowledged IN THE FINISHED BOOK (if Scholastic agree to publish it). I’ll announce the winner on my website when I’ve finished doing my edits.
In other news, ‘Ways to Live Forever’ has been doing well for itself. It won the Bolton Book Award (hurrah!), the Calderdale Book of the Year (yippee!) and the North East Book Award (which made me very happy as a North Easterner myself). It was also shortlisted for the Branford Board Award, the Lancashire Book of the Year, the UKLA Award and the Redbridge Book Award. I am feeling a little miffed that I never got to be involved in any local awards as a child, so I am very much enjoying going along to all of these ones instead. Many, many thanks to the organisers most of whom do this on top of their full-time jobs.
And I’m still blogging away at http://awfullybigblogadventure.blogspot.com, for those of you who are impatient with my very infrequent updates. Scroll down the labels on the right-hand side and click on ‘Sally Nicholls’ to find posts written by me. Or read some of the posts by other authors. They’re worth it.
Jemima is my suggestion. No idea why - I personally wouldn’t name my cat Jemima. But I like it none the less!!
August 24th, 2009 at 1:15 pmInkling. But it has to be a black cat.
August 24th, 2009 at 1:20 pmGeoffrey
August 24th, 2009 at 1:22 pmOur cat was called Moses which I always thought was a cool name!
August 24th, 2009 at 1:27 pmHow about “kit”? - just like the chocolate;-)
August 24th, 2009 at 4:06 pmIt depends on the cat - Tom for a tabby and Sheba for a grey and Felix for a black and white. A bit stereotypical but good anyway!
August 24th, 2009 at 7:21 pmIf it has big ears, may I suggest the name out of “Gremlins”, Gizmo?

August 24th, 2009 at 9:16 pmBingo. I helped raise a kitten with this name. Milo is nice too.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:22 pmMiaou! We already have names you humans know nothing about! So Pawse please!
August 24th, 2009 at 10:31 pmIt’s rather geeky, but I’d like to suggest Schrodinger.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:47 pmI had a really pretty, white-paws-and-bib cat once, called Fang. She really lived up to her name. The French version of ‘kitty’ is Minou: I think I’d like to call a cat that, because it has a nice purry sound, but can be shouted in a sharpish sort of way if said moggy has her nose in your dinner!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:59 amHow about ‘Woof’? Nicely confusing for the cat, and makes the neighbours think you’re a bit nuts when you’re trying to call it in at night.

Purely going with the title of your book, how about ‘Cupid’ (or Psyche)?
August 26th, 2009 at 11:21 amChoose with care, Sally. I once knew an old lady who called her mog Whiskey because of her colour. Visitors to the area would be startled to see the old darlin’ staggering down the front garden every night, food bowl in hand, yelling “Whiskey! Where’s my whiskey!”
August 27th, 2009 at 9:12 amHow about Marmaduke or Liquorice?! Because I know 2 cats of that name that are definitely naughty enough to be in a story! xxx
August 27th, 2009 at 4:01 pmhow about germima or fudge

September 26th, 2009 at 12:40 amThe best writer in my current Year 6 cohort is a girl called Elle and her cat is called Millie, so Millie is my suggestion as a tribute to Elle - this is a lot longer sentence that I’d intended! ;0)
Blessings, Neil
September 26th, 2009 at 3:46 pmIt also appears that this afternoon, as well as writing unnecessarily long sentences, I can’t even spell the word ‘than’ (as opposed to ‘that’ which is what I typed!) … ooops!

October 16th, 2009 at 5:14 amI think Missy is quite a nice one or Toby for a tom cat
October 20th, 2009 at 3:45 pmI think the cat should be called Tickle because it is a very cute name and it would be fun to read in a book.
October 22nd, 2009 at 2:54 pmThis is hard as we don’t know anything about the cat. Like its colour or distinguishing features.
I like:

Hi
I think you should call the cat Twinkle.
That’s my cat’s name.
I love cats too!
xxx
November 17th, 2009 at 5:50 pmPerhaps a fishy name? I’d suggest Minnow.
We once owned a cat called Kosha, which is Russian for “cat”.
I also know a couple who have a cat called Chairman Meow…
November 18th, 2009 at 10:21 amHow about writing a book with several cats in it? You’d have enough names to go round…
